RIP, Sir With Love

Sidney Poitier, whose role in films like “To Sir With Love,” “In the Heat of the Night” and “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” established him as Hollywood’s first Black idol and helped open the door for Black actors in the film industry, died on Thursday night at his home in Los Angeles. He was 94  


 


His death was confirmed by Eugene Torchon-Newry, acting director general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Bahamas, where Mr. Poitier grew up. No cause was given

Born in Miami, Poitier grew up on a tomato farm in the Bahamas and moved to New York aged 16


He signed up for a short stint in the army and did several odd jobs while taking acting lessons, en route to becoming a star of the stage and screen in the 1950s and 60s


 


The first Black performer to win the Academy Award for best actor, for “Lilies of the Field


and, along with Harry Belafonte, was a pioneering Black presence in mainstream Hollywood cinema


 


Hollywood figures paid tribute to Poitier’s achievements 


Oprah Winfrey posted a photo of herself with Poitier, adding: “The utmost, highest regard and praise for his most magnificent, gracious, eloquent life. I treasure him. I adored him. He had an enormous soul I will forever cherish. Denzel Washington, the second Black actor to win the best actor Oscar, said in a statement: “It was a privilege to call Sidney Poitier my friend. He was a gentle man and opened doors for all of us that had been closed for years. God bless him and his family


 



Sidney Poitier was an actor, director, activist and ambassador. He was best known for his groundbreaking and trailblazing work in the 1950s and 1960s. His breakthrough performances in film include The Defiant Ones (1958), Porgy and Bess (1959), A Raisin in the Sun (1961), Paris Blues (1961), Lilies of the Field (1963), A Patch of Blue (1965), To Sir, With LoveIn the Heat of the Night and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (all 1967)
